Bangladesh is on track to achieve Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s vision to “ensure energy for all” by reaching the target of generating 24,000 megawatt power by 2021, the Bangladesh High Commissioner to India said.
“It is a matter of great pleasure that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and (Indian) Prime Minister Narendra Modi have taken the partnership between the two countries far beyond strategic partnership touching upon virtually all areas of human endeavour,” said High Commissioner Syed Muazzem Ali.
He said this on Thursday while speaking at a workshop on the economic benefits of Bangladesh-India power trade at a New Delhi hotel, according to a message received here. Integrated Research and Action for Development (IRADe) organized the workshop aiming at promoting South Asian electricity trade.
The envoy said Bangladesh is relying on bilateral, sub-regional and regional cooperation in boosting its energy security besides its own national efforts.
He referred to the substantive cooperation between Bangladesh and India in energy sector. He said Dhaka’s engagement with India in the power sector has expanded since 2009 thanks to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s bold initiatives.
The high commissioner said Bangladesh is currently importing 660 MW of electricity from India while discussion on importing an additional 500 MW is underway.
The two countries, he said, have started cooperation on renewable energy and nuclear power. Bangladesh is building 2400 MW Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Pabna with Russian and Indian collaboration.
