The train service of Chittagong with Dhaka resumed after seven hours of suspension following derailment of a freight train at Fatehpur rail gate in Feni sadar upazila on Thursday.
The passengers of Dhaka-Chittagong highways experienced severe traffic jam due to the derailment of the train.
Thousands of buses, trucks, private cars and other vehicles were seen standing for hours causing extreme sufferings to the passengers.
Earlier, the engine of a Dhaka-bound container-laden train from Chittagong veered off the track at around 2:45am after crashing into a truck that remained stuck at Fatehpur level-crossing getting out of order halting train movement on the Dhaka-Chittagong route.
However, the train communication was restored at around 10:15 am after two relief trains from Laksham and Chittagong salvaged the engine.
Those were waiting to travel to Dhaka from Chittagong faced a major delay, Sayedur Rahman, Assistant Director of Bangladesh Railway, told The New Nation.
Kamal Uddin, a resident of Feni sadar, told this correspondent that he had to wait for six hours for going to Dhaka by the train.
Feni Railway Station Master Mahbubur Rahman said a relief train from Laksham cleared the mess and eased road transportation that was choked to a 20-kilometre tailback overnight.
Bijoy Express, a train that left from Mymensingh, was delayed for the derailment, he said.
