Brisk preparations have been taken to hold the Council of Dhaka City South Unit of Bangladesh Awami League at the Suhrawardy Udyan in the city on December 30 and in the meantime it is being discussed who is coming in the leadership of the new committee .
Sources said, in the post of president whose names are being discussed are Senior Vice- President of Dhaka City South Awami League and Councillor of Ward No 38 veteran freedom fighter Alhaj Abu Ahmed Mannafi , incumbant President Abul Hasnat and Vice President Abul Basher, and in the post of General Secretary sitting General Secretary of the Unit Shah Alam Murad and Labour Affairs Secretary and Councillor of Ward No 27 Tanim Aziz.
Among the aspirants for president post, Alhaj Abu Ahmed Mannafi has a colourful political career starting from 1954 . He took part in front fighting with Pakistani occupation forces at Chandina in Cumilla in the War of Liberation . He was injured on August 21 grenade attack with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina . Mannafi has a clean image and he is a very trusted to the high command of the party, sources said.
All candidates are lobbying with the high command to get their desired post in the coming council, but in the changed situation dedicated leaders will get priority , sources said .
On April 10, 2016, councils of both units were held, where AKM Rahmatullah and Sadek Khan were elected president and General Secretary of Dhaka North, while Abul Hasnat and Shah Alam Murad became President and General Secretary of Dhaka South Unit.
On September 11 of the same year, Dhaka North unit declared the names of presidents and general secretaries of 26 thanas, 46 wards, and nine unions, Dhaka South unit declared the names of presidents and general secretaries of 23 thanas, and 57 wards.
However, both city units’ leaders failed to complete the full-fledged committee.
Awami League central leaders also tried several times to form the committees, but failed due to inner conflicts among the city leaders.
There are, however, allegations that the top level management, especially the General Secretaries of the two committees, sheltered BNP-Jamaat members, and gave them posts in committees, along with their relatives, while seasoned and devoted leaders were dropped from the committees.
