The areas of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will expand soon with the inclusion of 17 neighbouring unions. But the both city corporations hesitate to accept the initiative owing to manpower crisis and absence of logistic supports, sources said.
If the plan is implemented, the area of Dhaka city will increase by 290 square kilometers, compared with its presently 360 square kilometers. But the question will remain how far the two city corporations will be able to provide them city amenities?
“We have been informed that nine unions will be included with the DNCC, but we are not ready to accept it right now due to our manpower crisis and absence of logistic supports,” said Annisul Haque, Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation over phone to The New Nation yesterday night.
“The Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) ministry has asked us to take preparation in this regard,’ said Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon yesterday afternoon.
Sources said, the government have initiated to include 17 unions with Dhaka North and South City Corporations.
The unions closed to the capital city are growing as city day by day. As such, the Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) ministry has drafted a proposal of adding them with the Dhaka city in a meeting related to city corporations boundaries. After completion of some formalities, the proposals will be implemented.
Officials said, Sultangonj, Beraid, Satarkul, Vatara, Badda, Uttarkhan, Dakkhinkhan, Horirampur and Dumuni will go to the north city corporation, while Nasirabad, Doniya, Sabuliya, Matuail, Demra, Dakkhingaon, Shyampur and Manda will be the part of south city corporation.
Mayor Annisul Haque said, they have 42 percent of the required manpower in present situation. “If more areas are included, then the manpower will have to be increased. Otherwise, it will be difficult for us to provide proper service to the city residents.”
Mayor Sayed Khokon said, “The eight unions will be the new part of the Dhaka south city corporation within next two weeks. The LGRD ministry informed us that.”
When asked about the capability of the city corporation in taking care of the new citizens, Sayeed Khokon said, “It is really a big question. We need to think about it. We need more man power, logistic and other supports to provide proper services to the added areas.”
Sources said the new area will have 31 wards in two city corporations. Dhaka north city will get 16 new wards while south city will get 15 wards. After that the total wards will be 121 in two city corporations.
The areas of the proposed 17 unions are 290 square kilometers, compared with new the city’s 360 square kilometers at present..
Dhaka City Corporation was formed in 1978. At that time, the 17 unions closed to the capital city were ignored. Those unions were kept under Tejgaon Circle. The people of those area insisted on inclusion of them with the capital city. But some of the behest groups were opposed to the move. If the move is executed, the Tejgaon circle will be vanished.
An official of LGRD ministry said preferring anonymity that the unions grew as the residential area of the capital city. The 75 percent people of those area do notdepend on agriculture. There are a good numbers of schools, colleges and industries in those unions.
But the union councils were not capable of providing them amenities, maintaining garbage systems, building necessary roads and other modern facilities. In these circumstances the people of those area have long been demanding inclusion in the two city corporations of Dhaka.
And at length the government has accepted their demand.
