The two-day annual election of Dhaka Bar Association began on Wednesday morning to elect a new executive committee of the association for 2015-2016.
The voting will end today (Thursday). A total of 61 candidates from the pro-Awami League ‘White Panel’, the
Pro-BNP-Jamaat ‘Blue Panel’ and some independent candidates’ ‘Green Panel’ are vying for 25 positions.
Chief Election Commissioner Advocate SM Altaf Hossain, is conducting the election of the country’s largest bar. A total of 15,372 lawyers are eligible to exercise their franchise this year.
The BNP-Jamaat backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya (Blue Panel) swept the Dhaka Bar Association elections last year bagging 18 posts out of 25, including those of the president and general secretary. On the other hand, the ruling Awami League-backed Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad (White Panel) secured six posts only. This year neck to neck fight is predicted.
