Abu Sazzad :
Dhaka Ahsania Mission Cancer Hospital is providing the international standard cancer treatment at a reasonable price to the poor, underprivileged and middle-class people across the country. In many cases, it provides free treatment to the vulnerable people.
“The aim of the hospital is to provide humanitarian services for the people, not making profit,” Kazi Forhad Alvi, Deputy Director of Ahsania Mission Cancer and General Hospital, Mirpur told The New Nation on Saturday.
The overall objective of the mission’s health intervention is to ensure the rights to access to the quality health services for the vulnerable groups of people, he added.
Actually, Dhaka Ahsania Mission is a voluntary development organization dedicated to humanitarian services. Set up in 1958 by Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah, eminent educationist, reformer and spiritual leader, the mission is the top philanthropic organisation in Bangladesh. The ideology of Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah was to work towards social and spiritual development of all human beings, mission sources said.
After his death, the followers of Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah solely worked to establish his philosophy in the society. As part of this journey, Dhaka Ahsania Mission established Ahsania Mission Cancer and General Hospital, Mirpur in 2001.
“We are providing 30 per cent of treatment and services facilities free or at subsidiaries rate to poor and the needy patients”, the deputy director of the mission said.
Currently, the mission is operating a good number of development programmes with a view to improving the livelihood of the deprived people, Alvi said, urging the corporate bodies, banks, business organizations and philanthropic people to donate for implementing these development programmes.
He appreciated all the donors as well as the present government to facilitate their activities in the society. “So far, the present government has donated Tk 20 crore for the further advancement of the mission,” he said.
Talking about the Mirpur Hospital, he said, yearly some 1,000 cancer patients are receiving treatment from there. Since the treatment of cancer is very expensive, thousands of people of the country die without getting any treatment.
Presently, more than 12 lakh people are bearing the disease of cancer in the country. About 2 lakh new cancer patients are added each year and 1.50 lakh die from the disease annually, said the deputy director.
Dhaka Ahsania Mission plans to ensure cancer treatment for all classes of people in the country. More modern medical equipment and cancer specialists are needed to ensure proper treatment for the huge patients, he said.
He urged the government to reduce the price of the medicine of cancer in order to ensure treatment for the people. “In many cases, we are providing free treatment, but we could not supply free medicine due to its high price,” he explained.
