Professor Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad, the Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), which is spearheading the country’s combat against Covid-19, has resigned. Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad submitted his resignation letter to the Secretary of the Public Administration Ministry on Tuesday morning, Health Service Division Secretary Md Abdul Mannan told journalists. The development has come in the wake of series of scams related to Covid-19 tests surrounding the state-run organizations and different private hospitals in the capital.
Dr. Azad was made DG of the DGHS on September 1, 2016.
As a DG of the key government organization, Abul Kalam Azad frequently ignored journalists’ phone calls whenever they sought his comment on related issues.
After revealing scams one after another, surrounding the DGHS including Covid-19 testing agreement with controversial health centers like JKG healthcare center and Regent Hospital the demands of his resignations were raised from different circles.
Earlier, a legal notice has been served seeking resignation of Abul Kalam Azad as the DG of the DGHS for apparently failing to take effective measures to ensure the safety of public health.
Supreme Court lawyer Advocate JR Khan Robin sent the notice to DGHS DG Prof Dr Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad on April 23.
