Opinion: Development for common mass

Lathiful Khabira :
Bangladesh is a developing country with its overall economic capacity. We have promising garment industry, multinational business, modern shopping malls, several infrastructures and other ongoing large projects. Based on these projects one might claim that Bangladesh is a developing country, and within a few years it is going to be a developed country.
If we measure our improvements only by our superficial projects, it is OK. But the question is how satisfied we are when unemployment and drug addiction remain as major problems for Bangladesh. Till now, we fight for a job because of excessive unemployment. It is a matter of concern that people are in disappointment because of unemployment. From 2008-2018 unemployed rate increased by 1.2% though it decreased a little from 2013-2017, 2.20% in 1991 became 4.37% in 2017, which is almost double.
However, the most notable issue is there are many educated persons who are unemployed, which is a major cause of depression. Consequently, a large part of our youth is drug addicted which obstacles our overall development. 20% people are drug addicted out of frustration. Eventually, the blame goes to unemployment.
Just a year ago, government doubled the salary of government service holders. But in private sectors it has not been increased accordingly. This has caused dissatisfaction among mass people. I think, instead of increasing salary, if government appoints more people within the same budget, the unemployment problem may alleviate to some extent.
Having so many problems like this hinders our development. Undoubtedly, Bangladesh has made some cultural developments. The world knows her as a cricket playing country. We have the best all-rounder for whom we can be proud of. But development means the mass population’s development which has not been ensured yet.
So, instead of being satisfied with apparent overall development we have to pay attention to whether or not the development is for the major portion of the population, and they are a part of these developments.
