1.5 lakh people will be employed in MEZ by 2021: Dev works of Economic Zone in Chattogram progressing fast

The installations of 250 industrial units are supposed to be completed by 2021 over 1150 acres of land at the coastal bank of Bay of Bengal under Mirsarai upazila , Chattogram .
The development works of the Mirsarai Economic Zone is progressing fast aimed at operations by end of 2021 . In first phase, the investment in these under constructed industrial units targeted Tk.4.5 billion US dollar. In these first phase industrial units, about 1.5 lakh people will get chance for employment. To protect the economic zone from tidal water, super bike protection wall beside the Bay coast is being constructed by a Chinese Engineering firm. This was disclosed by the General Manager of Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority Nazma Binte Alamgir recently during his visit in Chattogram.
MEZ is one of the consisting unit of Bangabandhu Shilpanagar . As a part of the total construction works of MEZ, the works of vike protection wall is continuing round the clock. In the meantime, the earth development work of the zone is progressing fast. Sources said 618 plots will be developed for the investors where about 350 industrial units may be installed. In the long run about 5 lakh workers may get chances of employment but in first phase 1.5 workers of different categories in 250 units may get employment by 2021. BEPZA official further said the first works is expected to be completed by June of 2021. Moreover, the MEZ will be turned as green industrial zone or Green zone. Project Director of BEZA Abdul Alim told that 90 percent works of protection wall is already competed and the two connection road with 300 feets height is progressing and the earth development works will be completed by 2020. BEPZA sources said they signed a MOU on May 18, 2017 with the govt for establishment of one Economic Zone . As per MOU, Prime Minister formal ground breaking ceremony unveiled through video conference from Bangabandhu International Conference Hall on January 24, 2018.
 Later on 18 September 2018, first phase fund of MEZ amounting to Tk.750 crores was approved in the ECNEC meeting . Mentionable that there are about 8 Export Processing zones in the country which are being operated successfully. The total investments in the ongoing EPZs is 5 billion US dollar and a total of Tk73 billion US dollar earned from these existing EPZ’s exports.
