Dev of work environ in ship-recycling suggested

Speakers said effective measures are needed to ensure safety of work environment along with reduction of health risks to avail the immense potentiality of the ship recycling industry.
They said the ship recycling sector is contributing to the national economy after meeting the demand for iron and steel.
They made the remarks at the inauguration ceremony of “Safe and environmentally sound ship recycling in Bangladesh/SENSREC” project in a city hotel.
Industries Ministry organized the programme with the assistance of International Maritime Organization (IMO) and NORAD.
Additional Secretary Begum Porag, Chief of IMO project Affair Jose Matheickal, Project Coordinator Simone Leyers, Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions Susan Wingfield and representative of Ship Breakers Association spoke on the occasion with Project Director Begum Yasmine Sultana in the chair.
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Industries Secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said the government is working hard to make the ship recycling sector as an environment-friendly industry.
He sought cooperation from IMO, ILO, UNIDO, NORAD and other development partners to build a green ship recycling industry.
