Lok Sabha election-2019 was particularly star-studded in West Bengal, the fortress of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC). Largely because the ruling TMC trusted a string of Bangla film celebrities with tickets.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also picked a couple of celebrities. And the stars have not disappointed, they seem to be shining bright.
The ruling TMC tried to woo voters by fielding heavyweights such as Satabdi Roy (who has won in the past), Mimi Chakraborty, Nusrat Jahan, Moon Moon Sen (she won from Bankura the last time) and Dev. Not one to be left behind, the BJP decided to fight back with its own celebrity candidates singer Babul Supriyo and Locket Chatterjee.
When the TMC announced its decision to field political newbies Mimi Chakraborty and Nusrat Jahan from two very important seats – Jadavpur and Basirhat, respectively – it sparked a flurry of memes, jokes and comments.
IANS reported several netizens expressing disgruntlement with the development and quoted one of them saying that Mamata Banerjee should know that unlike the Indian Premier League, politics does not need cheerleaders.
However, the counting of votes has proved otherwise and shown that Tollywood celebrities can not only make the audiences flock to the theatres, but can also get a sweeping victory on the political battlefield.
In Birbhum, Satabdi Roy is currently leading, with over 45 per cent of the votes in her favour. The actress is a two-time Member of Parliament and is eyeing another re-election.
Mimi Chakraborty, who is contesting against the BJP’s Anupam Hazra in Jadavpur, is also miles ahead of her rival. As of now, over 46 per cent of the votes are in her favour.
Nusrat Jahan is leading with a whopping 59 per cent of the votes in Basirhat. Earlier, the actress had told IANS that she is unfazed by the trolling and wants to work towards the welfare of the people.
“During the film promotions, it is our job to reach out to the people. As a political leader, I will have to ensure their welfare as well,” she said.
In Ghatal, Dev is currently leading with over 47 per cent of the votes in his favour. He is contesting against Bharati Ghosh of the BJP, who has garnered 41 per cent of the votes.
Locket Chatterjee of the BJP is currently leading from Hooghly, against two-term TMC parliamentarian Ratna De Nag. Earlier this month, a complaint was filed against the actress-turned-politician for allegedly threatening an officer at a poll booth. She claimed that she found evidence of vote rigging at his booth.
