Destiny-2000 director Farha Diba, wife of managing director (MD) of the organisation. Rafiqul Amin was sent to jail yesterday in a money laundering case. She was earlier sentenced in absentia to eight years of imprisonment and fined Tk 40 crore.
Judge Shaikh Nazmul Alam of the Special Judge Court-4 of Dhaka passed the order after Farha Diba surrendered to the court, seeking bail in the case.
The same court on May 12 sentenced her to eight years in prison and fined her Tk 40 crore, in default she will have to suffer two years more in the prison.
The court also sentenced Destiny-2000 MD Mohammad Rafiqul Amin to 12 years in prison and fined Tk 200 crore, in default he will have to suffer three years more in the prison.
The irregularities of Destiny-2000, believed to be perhaps the worst multi-level marketing scam in the country, came under the spotlight in early 2012 after the Central Bank found that it had been involved in illegal transactions.
