Shah Alam Nur :
Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque has said special measures would be taken to secure cattle markets and its surrounding areas where large-amount of money transactions attract the opportunity-seeking criminals.
The police chief made the disclosure at a press conference at Police Headquarters’ conference room in the capital on Monday.
“The law enforcers will remain active to seize fake notes and to arrest ‘Agyan party’
men at different cattle markets. We have also directed the officials to take tough action against muggers, snatchers, pickpockets, and sedative gangs,” the IGP said. The statement of IGP came at a time when members of ‘Oggyan party’ have become desperate taking the opportunity of the relaxed mood of law enforcement agencies. Just two days ago, one cattle trader died and 30 others were unconscious after having food at a hotel adjacent to a cattle market in Rajshahi, which was a major set-up of ‘Ogyan party’ to take away cash and valuables by victimizing the businessmen. At the same time, the fake currency makers have also become very much active targeting the cattle trade ahead of Eid-ul Azha. In the latest incident, the Detectives arrested six members of a counterfeit money syndicate and seized forged currency notes worth about Tk 1.20 crore from the city’s Mirpur area on August 6.
Declaring a war against the forged currency makers, the IGP said the law enforcement agencies would setup a number of teller machines at cattle markets and big shopping malls across the country to identify fake notes during the Eid-ul Azha.
“In this regard, the law enforcement agencies have already held meetings with Bangladesh Bank authorities to ensure that the commercial banks will offer evening banking services at branches near the cattle markets,” he said. He cautioned that without any specific information none can intercept sacrificial animal-laden trucks in the name of verifying necessary papers. The IGP said: “The authorities will not put up with any extortion from the sacrificial animal carrying trucks. Necessary directives have been issued not to intercept any trucks without any specific information.” According to the source, the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) are going to set up 20 makeshift cattle markets in the capital for upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, which will be observed in this month.
The cattle markets of DSCC are Jhigatola-Hazaribagh ground, Rahmatganj playground, Meradiya Bazar Khilgaon, Sadeque Hossain Khoka playground, Adarsha School field and its adjoining DCC’s open space at Golapbagh, Armanitola playground, Moitri Shangha playground adjoining Uttar Shajahanpur Khilgaon Rail Gate Bazar, Dhupkhola East and Club field, Balurmath adjoining Brothers Union Club in Gopibagh, open space adjoining Postogola crematorium, and Bangladesh Math.
Under DNCC, the markets will be set up at Uttara Azampur Government Primary School field, open space at Khilkhet Banorupa residential project, open space in Agargaon slum, open space adjoining Banani Railway Station, playground of Agargaon slum, open space of Eastern Housing, playground of Polytechnic Institute, open space of adjoining bypass road of J block of Baridhara, and open space adjoining Uttara Sector 11 and 13. The IGP said the members of law enforcing agencies will take up fool-proof security measures for houses, highways, and shopping malls, and bus, train and launch stations and cattle markets across the country to ensure safety of the countrymen ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. He said to make the security foolproof check posts will set up at different strategic points across the country, which will be monitoring by the law enforcers round the clock. He said all of the police officers including Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of several ranges, Superintendent of Police, (Officers-in-charge OCs) of the police stations across the country have already been instructed to remain vigilant in the areas under their purview to restrict suspected criminals and their activities. He said the law enforcement agencies will set up ‘watchtowers’ at 14 traffic congestions-prone points on highways.
He said “The members of the all law enforcement agencies will remain ready to meet the emergency during the Eid-ul Azha.”
Shahidul Haque said police headquarters launched help desk for Bangladeshi expatriates to solve their problems quickly.
He said that about 8.0 million Bangladeshi expatriates are working outside of the country. They sent money in Bangladesh, which increases our remittance. These expatriates face several types of problems but we could not pay heed to them, he added. The IGP said that Bangladeshi expatriates can contact with police at anytime from anywhere to get help through E-mail: [email protected] and mobile number: 01769-690019.
