Catching mother hilsa fish is still going on despite the government’s 22-day ban on netting any ilish.
During thje bvan, fishermen generally get donation from the government. But many of them are not getting this facility in spite of having fisheries’ cards. So, they are compelled to netting ilish illegally.
At least 120 fishermen were arrested on Friday night and Saturday in connection with the illegally netting mother ilish in the Padma, Jamuna and Meghna rivers crossing six districts.
The detainees were also fined, and sentenced to different durations from 10 days to a year according to their crimes.
In Shariatpur, a mobile court led by RAB-8 arrested at least 38 fishermen on Friday night when they were illegally netting ilish on the Padma River, near Zanzira upazila.
During the time, RAB also seized 200,000 metre fishing nets and 150kgs of ilish from the spot.
Mohammad Tajul Islam, Captain of RAB-8 in Madaripur Camp said,
on information of ongoing illegal fishing in the restricted areas in the Padma under Zanjira upazila a team consisting of Executive Magistrate Mahbubul Haque and Upazila Fisheries Officer Bishawjit Boiraghi conducted the drive on the Padma River near Zanjira upazila. During the drive, the Mobile Court jailed them for one year.
In Rajbari, a mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Mohammad Mohiuddin arrested at least 51 fishermen and jailed them for 12 days on Friday night for illegally fishing ilish on the Padma River, nearby Goyalandho and Dowlotia areas under sadar upazila of the district.
In Sirajganj, a mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Anisur Rahman fined, and sentenced 17 fishermen to an 11 days in jail on Saturday morning for illegally catching hilish fish in different points of the Jamuna River.
In Munshiganj, a group of fishermen attacked the police on Saturday on the banks of the Meghna River adjacent to Goalgawn area of Gazaria upazila after they obstructed them from catching mother ilish following the day government ban.
In response to the attack, a team of river police fired rubber bullets to bring the situation under control, and fined 19 fishermen for Tk 5,000.
Aslam Sheikh, Fisheries Officer of Gazaria upazila confirmed the news to the media.
In Gaibanda, a mobile court fined and sentenced nine fishermen to a 10-day in jail on Saturday noon.
Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Sanjoy Banarji confirmed the matter to the media.
In Jalokati, a mobile court fined and sentenced three fishermen to different tenure after a joint drive on the Soganda river of the district on Saturday morning.
Executive Magistrate Basir Gazi confirmed the matter to the media.
