Zubair killing: Depositions of witnesses deferred for sixth time

A Dhaka court once again deferred the recording of the depositions of witnesses in the sensational Zubair murder case for the sixth time on Thursday.
Judge ABM Nijamul Haque of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 of Dhaka deferred the hearing and fixed May 28 as new date as no witness was found present in his courtroom on Thursday.
The court so far recorded the depositions of 19
witnesses. It has been learnt that the testifying of the witnesses is being interrupted as important witness Nitol is yet to be produced to the court to record his depositions. In the similar circumstances, the court deferred recording of depositions on April 20, 27, May 5 and 8.
On April 2, Associate Professor Kabirul Basher, who is a member of the university authority formed inquiry committee, testified in the case.
However, February 23, four accused, all former Chhatra League activists just sneaked out of the courtroom. They are Khandaker Ashiqul Islam alias Ashiq, Khan Mohammad Rais, Ishtiaq Mehbub Arup and Mahbub Akram.
Zubair Ahmed, 23, a 37th batch student of the Department of English and activist of Chhatra League, Jahangirnagar University unit, died at United Hospital in the capital on January 9, 2012, hours after his abduction and tortures on the campus by his political opponents on January 8.
The Investigation Officer of the case submitted the charge sheet of the case on April 8 last year against 13 students of the university’s 37th batch.
