A Dhaka court yesterday (Monday) recorded the depositions of Momtaj Sultana Lucy, wife of slain Mahbubur Rahman Sujon, a garment scrap cloth trader, in the case she filed against 10 people, including five policemen of Mirpur Model Police Station and five informants of police, accusing them of killing her husband.
Magistrate SM Ashiqur Rahman of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court recorded the statement of Lucy from 12.30 pm to 4 pm with a break of 30 minutes in his office chamber. Sujon’s mother Shahida Begum was continually weeping
outside the chamber at that time. Lucy, however, was looking calm and quite outside the chamber but tears were rolling down her cheeks.
Officer-in-Charge of Mirpur Model Police Station, Salauddin Ahmed and Sub-Inspector Zahidur Rahman were made accused in the sensational case.
Other witnesses in the case namely Sujon’s mother Shahida Begum, elder brothers Nazrul Islam Shamim, Mahbubul Alam, Minhaz and Saiful Alam are scheduled to testify today (Wednesday).
On July 20, a Dhaka court ordered a judicial investigation into the alleged custodial death of Sujon at Mirpur Police Station. On July 23, a Magistrate was assigned to conduct judicial enquiry into the death. The Magistrate summoned Sujon’s wife Lucy to appear in his court on August 5 for recording her statement.
On July 12, a police team led by SI Zahid detained Sujon, his wife and their five-year old son from their Shankar residence in Mohammadpur, Dhaka and took them to the Police Station. Sujon’s family members claimed police had tortured him in a separate room of the police station. Physicians declared him dead the following day when he was taken to hospital.
Meanwhile, SI Zahid was placed on 14 days’ remand in four phases and on completion of remand on Saturday he was sent to the jail. Another accused, police informer Nasim Shaikh had already made confessional statement confessing his offence.
On July 16, Zahid and Nasim were arrested at Rupnagar of Mirpur in the capital after the autopsy report mentioned that Sujon died of torture.
