Dense fog covered most parts of the country disrupting normal life and hampering movement of all modes of transport, including water vessel services, since early Friday.
The lowest temperature in the country was recorded in Jessore at 11.4 degrees Celsius while it was 14.5 in Dhaka.
However, Director of Bangladesh Metrological Department Shah Alam said both the temperature and the heavy fog were quite normal in this late Autumn season.
Vehicles are moving slowly due to poor visibility. Ferry crossings were suspended for more than six hours from 4:00am to 10:00am at Shimulia-Kawrakandi and Daulatdia-Paturia routes due to dense fog.
Sirajul Haque, Manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Shimulia ghat said ferry services on the Shimulia-Kawrakandi route remained cut off for about six and a half hours.
Eight ferries with a large number of vehicles and passengers were kept anchored at Shimulia and Kawrakandi ferry terminals.
Some 600 vehicles were kept waiting on both sides of the river for crossing.
However, he said, ferry services resumed around 10:30 am as fog disappeared after the sunrise.
Meanwhile, ferry services on the Daulatdia-Paturia route in the Padma River also remained suspended for about five hours till Friday morning.
Salauddin, Manager of BIWTC at Aricha ghat said ferry services as well as plying of water vessels came to a halt at 5:00 am due to blurred visibility caused by dense fog.
Eight ferries with a large number of vehicles and passengers were kept anchored at Daulatdia and five ferries at Paturia.
Besides, three ferries remained stuck in the middle of the Padma River since 5:00 am.
Passengers suffered as about 500 vehicles were kept waiting on both sides of the river for crossing.
Meanwhile, a light cold wave has hit Rajshahi, Pabna, Jessore, Kushtia and Srimangal and it may continue, according to weather forecast.
A moderate cold wave with a speed of six to 12 km per hour from the south and south-west hit the river basins. It may rain in the next five days, the forecast added.
