Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque expressed his optimism that the dengue situation will come under control soon with the concerted efforts of all and effective awareness campaign.
“We are continuously monitoring the dengue situation. We are destroying breeding grounds of mosquitoes. We believe the dengue situation will come under control soon,” he said.
The minister said this on Thursday while replying to questions of journalists after an inter-ministerial meeting with two city corporation mayors at the ministry’s conference room at the secretariat here.
Principal Coordinator (SDG Affairs) of Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Md Abul Kalam Azad, Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon, Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam, Secondary and Higher Education Division Secretary Md Sohorab Hossain, Health Services Division Secretary Md Asadul Islam, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Director General Professor Dr Abul Kalam Azad, Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) President Dr Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddin and Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad President Professor Dr Iqbal Arslan attended the meeting.
Maleque said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, now on an official visit in London, is keeping watch on the dengue situation every day and giving directives.
He said the ministry is working in a coordinated way with the Prime Minister’s Office to tackle the dengue situation.
The minister said some 17,163 dengue patients across the country received treatment till July 31. Of them, 12266 returned home after receiving treatment and a total of 4903 patients are being treated at different hospitals, he said adding that 14 persons died of dengue.
The minister said new wards have been opened at hospitals to tackle the dengue situation. Civil surgeon in every district has been given directives to tackle the dengue outbreak, he said adding that some 29 experts are visiting different districts to this end.
He said some 65,000 kits have been distributed for dengue test and an approval has been given to import 5 lakh more kits.
Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon said they are working in a coordinated way to tackle the dengue situation.
The mayor said 11 wards including ward number 14, 18, 23, 29, 35, 42, 55 and 56 and Jigatola, Hazaribagh, Kamrangirchar, Dhaka College, New Market, Lalbagh, Nababpur, Ganaktuli, Islambagh, Bangshal, English Road, East Jurain areas in the city are now dengue free.
