Dengue patients on rise in city

The number of dengue patients is on rise in city due to mosquito bites owing to apathy of concern officials of the Dhaka city corporations to spread medicines to destroy mosquito-breeding hubs, alleged sufferers.
They said, the city dwellers are increasingly being affected by dengue, an infectious viral fever that can be fatal at time.
According to an official data, around one thousand people have been affected by dengue from January to July period this year. Of them, five patients have died in different hospitals and clinics during the period.
The city dwellers in different areas alleged that the employees of both the City Corporations are not regular in spreading medicines to demolish mosquito hubs.
 “Dangerous time for spreading of dengue is from June to November. The aedes mosquitoes are responsible for this disease. Aedes are usually breeding in clean water. The people should be aware of the non-usable clean water to be kept more than two days in any pots,” Dr. Mukhlesuzzaman Hero, Deputy Director of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University told The New Nation.
If anybody falls in fever in this time, he/she should be taken to doctors quickly, he advised.
Sources said, two city corporations of Dhaka spend around TK 30 crore every year in the eradication of mosquitoes. But the breeding of mosquitoes has not seemed to reduce, they said.
People in different areas in Dhaka alleged that the City Corporations’ workers are very irregulars to spreading medicines to kill mosquitoes.  
An official of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on condition of anonymity said that some dishonest employees used to sell the mosquito-killing materials in the open market. As rainfall is very little this year the mosquitoes breeding is seemed to be on rise.
Corporations’ sources said, the DSCC’s mosquito killing budget this year is around Tk 13 crore while the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) allocation is Tk 17 crore.
According to the Health Department, 928 people have been affected from dengue this year. An official of the department preferring anonymity said that the real number of affected people might be more than that. He said, the number has counted according to only 25 hospitals in the city.
But there are more than one thousand government and private hospitals and clinics in operations in the capital. “If we able to make a survey in all the hospitals, the real number of affection would be much more,” he said.
Around 3,162 of people had affected by dengue last year. That was the highest number affected by dengue for the last eight years.
To reduce the risk of spreading dengue, the DSCC has started week-long mosquito killing operations since Sunday.
At an inaugural programme at Dhanmondi lake, DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon said, “The risk of dengue spreading is high this year than the last year. The Corporation is trying to demolish the mosquito hubs. Along with it, the citizens also should keep clean inside of residence and yards to save us from dengue.”
 “If the City Corporation’s employees make any neglect on their duties to demolishing mosquito hubs, peoples should inform us soon,” he said.
When asked, Chief Health Officer of DSCC Brigadier General Dr. Saidur Rahman told The New Nation, “We are working to demolish the mosquito hubs. The City Corporation has already sent letters to Housing Societies to take proper steps in their housing areas to destroy mosquito-breeding hubs.”
Chief Health Officer of DNCC Brigadier General Dr. SMM Saleh Bhuiyan said, “We are on close monitoring of the situation. To make the people aware DNCC are involved in publishing adds to newspapers, distributing leaflets and posturing across the city, he said.
