Dengue outbreak neither epidemic nor normal, says Health Minister

The dengue situation in the country is neither an epidemic nor normal, said Health Minister Zahid Maleque.
“However, the number of patients is rising,” he said on Wednesday at a seminar on dengue. Killing mosquitoes is not our duty, the minister said, adding: “When someone is infected with dengue then it’s our duty to provide that person with proper treatment.”
Last year, we had 10,000 dengue patients, and this year, over 30,000 people took treatment, he added.
“We have already prepared four more hospitals: Sheikh Hasina Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit with 1,000 beds, the Sheikh Russell Gastro Liver Institute, new building of the Orthopedic Hospital with 500 beds and the extended building of the Suhrawardy Hospital.”
The Eid leave of hospital staff has been cancelled in all the government hospitals and we will ask private hospitals to ensure that their services are not curtailed, Maleque.
Dhaka-9 lawmaker Saber Hossain Chowdhury, who was also present at the seminar said, “So far, dengue has been detected in 128 countries and in certain nations, the number of affected went beyond 25000. this is a global problem.”
Director of Mughda Medical College Hospital, Professor Amin Ahmed Khan, said: “Usually, the prevalence of dengue remains till September.”
