The Department of Business Administration of East West University (EWU) has recently arranged a seminar captioned “Demutualized Dhaka Stock Exchange: Changes and Challenges”.
The keynote speaker of the seminar was Prof Swapan Kumar Bala, Managing Director, Dhaka Stock Exchange. Prof Ahmed Shafee, Vice Chancellor of East West University graced the seminar as chief guest. He inaugurated the session briefly sharing his view on demutualization stock exchange in general.
Prof Swapan Kumar Bala described how the need of demutualization was strongly felt after the stock market collapse on December, 2010.
He pointed out some of the major benefits of demutualization, Such as improved speed and flexibility in decision making, diversifying into other markets and services, a clearer and simpler governance structure, better transparency and minimized ownership risk.
The challenge is to cope up with the structural change and turn DSE into a listed company ‘for profit’ organization from its previous ‘not for profit’ stage.
Prof Dr Tanbir Ahmed Chowdhury, Chairperson, Department of Business Administration and Dean, Faculties of Business and Economics chaired the session.
In his concluding speech, he emphasized on DSE’s role in ensuring information availability which will help investors take informed investment decisions. Faculty members of the Business Department and students of the university attended the seminar.
