Speakers at a roundtable conference of Free Thinkers’ Forum (FTF) on Friday said a national unity is needed to establish democracy and save the interest of the country. The democratic practice in Bangladesh is also needed for the sake of overall development of the South Asian countries, they said.
They alleged that that there is no democracy in the country and the present Parliament does not represent the country’s people. The speakers expect that the new government of India would work to flourish democratic practices in the South Asian countries, as India is the biggest democratic country.
The FTF arranged the roundtable on “Change in Indian Politics: Impact on South Asian Countries” at the National Press Club in the city. BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah addressed it as the chief guest with Editor of Daily Naya Diganta Alamgir Mohiuddin in the chair.
Moderated by the FTF Chairman Jahangir Chowdhury, BNP chairperson’s adviser Barrister Haider Ali, former president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Ruhul Amin Gazi, BNP central leader Abu Naser Mohammad Rahmatullah and president of Krishak Sramik Party Advocate MA Latif Majumder also addressed the function, among others.
The speakers said that regional development would be hampered in the absence of democracy in Bangladesh. They called upon the newly election government of India to maintain relation with the people of Bangladesh, not to any particular side.
