UNB, Dhaka :
Claiming that Bangladesh’s democracy is now on a tight rein, BNP spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday alleged that the government is ruling the country like feudal emperors and kings.
Addressing a discussion programme, he said, “The government has pushed the country into a dark tunnel. They’re running the country depending on Rab and police after getting isolated from people.”
The BNP leader further said, “The ministers and ruling party leaders’ remarks demonstrate that they’re acting like feudal emperors and kings. Their body language and attitude expose their arrogance. In fact, they’re behaving like an autocrat and tyrant ruler.”
Fakhrul, also the BNP acting secretary general, also urged people to get united under BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s leadership to get rid of Awami misrule and save the country from destruction.
Bangladesh Democratic Forum arranged the discussion titled ‘An acceptable election is a precondition of development’ at the Jatiya Press Club.
Awami League does not believe in democracy, Fakhrul said adding that the party has changed the definition of democracy by introducing a regimented democracy in Bangladesh. “The definition of Awami League’s democracy is grabbing power without vote and contesting election.”
Referring to ruling party leaders’ comments that development is most important than democracy, the BNP leader said democracy is the precondition to development. “The country’s people had liberated the country for democracy. A democratic environment is necessary in the country so that people can express their views without any fear.”
Mentioning that the country’s people believe in free democracy, he said they will restore the true democracy at any cost.
He came down hard on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her allegation that BNP had wanted to bring a military rule by foiling the January-5 election, saying she has resorted to lies in parliament to fool people.
