UNB, Dhaka :
Observing that the country now lacks democracy, BNP senior leader Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan on Friday said the country’s development is not possible keeping democracy at bay.
“Rhetoric of development is now meaningless in Bangladesh as there’s no democracy here. The government is saying they’ll carry out development keeping democracy away. It can’t be an ideal thinking,” he said.
Moyeen Khan, a BNP standing committee member, came up with the remarks while addressing a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club arranged by Swadhinata Forum, marking BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s 34th death anniversary.
He said, the people of Bangladesh now prefer freedom of expression to have a handful of food. “The 16 crore people now want to see their freedom of expression is ensured, not a handful of rice. Those who deny this fact cannot be the pro-liberation forces.” Recalling BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s contributions to the country’s development, the BNP leader said a quarter had thought no one would remember Zia after 30 years of his death. “But around 70-80 percent people of Bangladesh have kept him in their mind and they respect him.”
