Gono Forum President and Jatiya Oikyafront Convener Dr Kamal Hossain feared that democracy might turn into autocracy in absence of people’s representatives in the Parliament and lack of courage to tolerate criticism in the public meetings.
The Jatiya Oikyafront Convener said it while speaking at the inaugural session of Gono Forum’s special national council 2019 titled ‘Form National Unity to Rescue Democracy’ organised in the Mohanagar Natya Mancha on Friday.
If someone sells votes in exchange of money, then there can be nothing worse than injustice. In a free and fair election, everyone can exercise his or her franchise with jolly mind and waits for results in a body. That’s why we give importance to election and vote, he said.
Dr Kamal Hossain urged the people to play the role of a watchdog as owners, of the country and to protect their constitutional rights and make the government accountable.
“The Constitution has guaranteed people’s rights to speech and vote. But that have to be attained. So, we must be organised and guard our rights,” he said.
He said that none, nor even the President and the Prime Minister, is above the law. “We must register our protest if anything is done beyond the Constitution. We must make the government accountable. Or else, we’ll lose our ownership of the country.”
The Gono Forum Chief said, people must remain aware about the way the country is being run. “We’ll have to be careful so that the police play its due role. All must discharge their duties abiding by the Constitution.”
Dr Kamal said, the police can help ensure democratic and constitutional rule in the country by playing its proper role.
As the owners of the country, he said people have some responsibilities to enjoy their ownership “We must be organised and play an active role in ensuring good governance and the rule of law in the country.”
The Gono Forum President said, people will have to force the government to govern the country as per the Constitution with their united efforts.
Depicting the country’s overall situation, Dr Kamal urged people not to get frustrated. “The victory of people is certain.”
The last council of Gono Forum was held on December 10, 2011.
