Police dispersed a group of people who were demonstrating on Wednesday in front of the Jatiya Press Club for holding re-election under a non-partisan government.
About 50 people, under the banner of “National Unity for Right to Voting and Good Governance” took part in the human chain at about 11am.
ABM Mostafa Amin, Convener of the platform, claimed that police snatched their banners and evicted them from the spot.
“We were forced to leave the area,” he said. “We cannot accept the rigging that took place in the 11th Parliamentary election. We demand a fresh election under a non-partisan caretaker government immediately,” he said.
He alleged that police foiled their peaceful demonstration and a “logical demand”.
Later, the leaders of the platform held an emergency meeting at its Dhanmondi office in the city and condemned the undemocratic behaviour of police.
It may be mentioned that the Awami League-led Grand Alliance secured a landslide victory in the national election held on Sunday, December 30, winning 288 seats out of 300 in the Jatiya Sangsad.
