Freedom fighters working in government service have demanded their retirement age be raised by 2 years, following the increase in retirement age of general govt. employees.
A group of government-employed freedom fighters led by the tax commissioner working in the national revenue board Dr SM Jahangir Alam, in a statement on Sunday demanded the raise.
The Awami League government came to power in 2009 and increased the retirement age limit of freedom fighters working as government employees by two years.
Next time retirement age limit of all general government employees increased by two years, and as a result equality was maintained.
A bill to increase retirement age limit of freedom fighters who are govt employees was placed in the Jatiya Sangsad on February 23, 2010. By placing the bill LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam said, the bill is placed for the valuable contribution of the freedom fighters.
He also said if in future other government employees’ retirement age gets increased, the freedom fighter-employees’ retirement age will also be increased. But in the year 2012, though general government employees’ retirement age was increased by two years, the retirement age of freedom fighter-employees was not increased again. The retirement age of scientists increased to 67 years and university teacher’s retirement age increased to 65 years.
