Farmers under the banner of Samajtantrik Khetmazoor, Bangladesh Krishok Samity and Krishok Front Rangpur district units demonstrated splashing paddy on Rangpur- Kurigram road at Sathmatha area of the city yesterday noon demanding purchasing of crops directly from the farmers.
Farmers said that the department of food has not yet begun paddy purchase despite of bumper crop of Boro paddy in Rangpur region.
They claimed that the government declared to buy farmer’s paddy directly at the rate of Tk 920/ per maund [40 kg] from 3 May this year but the department has yet bought any quantity from them. So, they have to sell their produce at the local markets at cheaper rate. They demanded government immediate intervention in this regard.
Farmers leaders, Anowar Hossain Bablu and Polash Kanti Nag addressed the meeting. They demanded to buy paddy directly from farmers at the fixed rate of the government and introduce rural rationing system.
District Controller of Food, Saiful Islam refuted the complain. He said, they were directly purchasing paddy from the farmers of the district. The government has decided to buy 7 lakhs metric tons of paddy from the farmers across the country this year.
In Rangpur the department will buy 19800 metric tons. Of them, the department already bought around 150 metric tons in the district at rate of Tk 23 per kg. They are also making the farmers payment through their own bank account. They collected around 20000 lists of farmers in the district, the DC Food added.
