Chattogram Bureau :
A 13,000 liter plant was recently set up at the Covid Dedicated Chittagong General Hospital to supply oxygen centrally. However, data from the last two months says that the oxygen supply company has never been able to refill the plant in full. The company is able to supply only 3 to a maximum of 6,000 liters of oxygen.
According to the concerned doctors, due to the crisis, the supply companies are supplying only a small amount of oxygen. The supplier is doing this to keep the oxygen supply to other hospitals in order. In other words, as the demand for oxygen has increased, the crisis of this life-saving gas is also appearing day by day.
Covid Focal Person and Senior Consultant of the hospital Abdur Rob Masum said that at present, about 90 percent of the patients admitted to the hospital need oxygen. However, at one time, oxygen was not required except for patients admitted to the ICU. But in the last two months, the demand has doubled.
Expressing concern, the doctor said that if the number of patients increases more than the current one, then there could be a clear crisis of oxygen. Then it will be difficult to handle.
Oxygen suppliers and experts, like the doctor, fear that if the number of patients continues to rise, it will be a challenge to ensure a life-saving supply of oxygen to neighboring countries like India. Therefore, according to experts, effective measures need to be taken now to keep the oxygen supply in order.
According to the data, the current demand for oxygen in the country is 150 tons. Of this, Linde Bangladesh Limited is supplying 90 tons. The company produces oxygen through two plants at Narayanganj and Sitakunda in Chittagong.
Of this, only 15 tons is produced from the Sitakunda plant. Of the rest, 20 tonnes comes from India. The company produces all the others at its plant in Narayanganj. Besides, Spectra 36 tons, Abul Khair Steel Melting Ltd. Daily 8 tons, Islam Oxygen 20 tons and AK Oxygen Ltd. Is producing 6 tons. However, both the big companies used to import liquid oxygen from India. But now Bangladesh is going to face a new challenge as India has stopped exporting that oxygen to them.
