Former Ameer of Hefajat-e-Islam Bangladesh Allama Shah Ahmed Shafi was caused to die through torture in a planned way, says a faction of the party and his family members demanding judicial probe into the death.
They said it at a press conference in the city’s Jatiya Press Club on Tuesday.
Speaking at the press conference, Ahmed Shafi’s elder son Yusuf Madani complained that his death was hastened by torture. “Babunagari in the garb of

Islamic clothes pushed him (Ahmed Shafi) to death.” Hefajat leader Mufti Faizullah said the way Babunagari was made Ameer of the organisation hurriedly after Ahmed Shafi’s death was illegal. “They’re not the mainstream of Hefajat.”
A book titled ‘Last three days in Hathazari’ was handed over to the reporters where it was claimed that dissidents severed the oxygen cable of the Hefajat chief in the ambulance, putting his life at risk.
In the press briefing Allama Shafi’s family placed four point demands and urged the government to take steps:
First, confirm giving of punishment to those who were involved with Allama Shafi’s mysterious death by forming a judicial body.
Second, arrest the suspects after investigation.
Third, confirm security of the Allama Shafi’s family members and the followers and take initiatives against those who are threatening. Fourth, expel all Allama Shafi’s anti-group from his institutions and organizations.
Earlier, a case was filed against 36 people, including Mamunul Haque, acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish and Joint Secretary General of Hefajat-e-Islam Bangladesh, alleging that Shah Ahmed Shafi was cansed to die in a planned way.
Accepting the charge, the court ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation to probe it. The Hefajat chief died in a Dhaka hospital on September 18 due to age-related complications at the age of 103.
