Shakti Railway, which is in favor of the liberation war of Ishwardi, has demanded at different times to change the name of ‘Nazim Uddin’ High School. But even in 50 years of independence, the name of this school has not changed. In this regard, several memorandums were also given to the Paksey Divisional Office of Western Railway to change the name.
On December 9 last year, the Chhatra League of Ishwardi held a protest procession and assembly to change the name of Bangladesh Railway Government Nazim Uddin High School. Meanwhile, Ishwardi Upazila and Municipal Chhatra League took out a protest procession and erased the name ‘Nazim Uddin’ from the main gate of the school with black ink. Although this initiative of Chhatra League has been praised, the work has not been done yet.
This news was published in various national dailies and local newspapers. The railway authorities sat motionless at this time. The people of Ishwardi have always been vocal in demanding change of the name of the school. A committee was formed in the context of the movement. Apart from senior railway officials, the then Upazila Chairman (now Member of Parliament) Bir Muktijoddha Nuruzzaman Biswas is a member of the inquiry committee. But the report of that committee has not yet seen the light of day. So the people of Ishwardi have not yet been freed from the burden of the name ‘Nazim Uddin’.
The history of the language movement shows that in the session of the Pakistan Constituent Assembly on 23 February 1948, the then Prime Minister of East Bengal, Khwaja Nazim Uddin, strongly opposed the Bengali language and spoke in favor of making Urdu the state language.
