Sylhet Correspondent :
Excessive deforestation as well as mindless pollution of the environment and nature is posing threat to the existence wild lives in Sylhet region. Wild beasts are being getting killed in the hands of the rural people in a large number as they enter the human habitats coming from the deep forests.
Many environment activists alleged that the country is losing wildlife every year in a great number as the amount of forest land of the country is decreasing and for this reason, wild animals are entering the residential areas for food and the insensible people of the rural areas are killing them due to ignorance. Also wild lives are not feeling safe in the forests because unwanted entry of humans is increasing day by day; trees from deep forests are being cut down and hunters are silently pouching birds in forests. Almost all environment organisations and activists worriedly expressed they urged the Department of Forest and Environment of Sylhet Division several times to protect forests from any kind of hazard for saving wild lives but the department did not take it in their concern.
About 15 days earlier, two wildcats (Mechho Bagh) were caught in trap laid by Md Shahabuddin of the village Chondorpur under Budhbaribazar union in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet district. Among those cats, local people beat one to death while another is still in his possession. Shahbuddin told that a large number of wild cats from nearest forests enter his home and he is being suffered by those wild beasts since long as those beasts eat his cattle by entering home more often and to stop those nuisance of wilds, he made a trap and caught several wild beasts and most of them were killed.
An environment activist and Member of Bhoomisantan Bangladesh Anis Mahmud told that ‘Sylhet Environment Department is always neglecting its duty of protecting wild life and nature though we urged the department several times.’
He also said, ‘The department is more enthusiastic to harm the nature by artificial construction in deep forests in Sylhet region instead of protection and preservation and construction of watch tower in Ratargul Swamp Forest by Forest Department is a strong example of that.’
Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Golapganj Asadul Haque told, ‘ I requested the Divisional Forest Office to appoint a forester in my office but it’s so far, no person from forest office even visited here.’
Divisional Forest Officer Delwar Hussain told, ‘We were not informed about that captive wild but well will rescue it as soon as possible.’ He further said, ‘The Sylhet Forest Office doesn’t have enough staff to look after all the matters well.’
