BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Sunday alleged that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has signed defence MoUs with India as part of a plot to stay in power for five more years.
She made the remarks as the newly elected officer bearers of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) met her at her Gulshan office. The SCBA leaders greeted Khaleda by presenting a bouquet on the occasion.
Speaking at the programme, the BNP chief also alleged that the government now has a covert friendship with her party’s alliance partner Jamaat-e-Islami.
“The current regime is not elected by people. They’re making the same plan to come to power in the future. They’ve now signed a deal (with India) selling the country to cling to power for five more years. It seems they will quit power after five years handing over the country’s charge in written (to India),” she said. Khaleda questioned whether Awami League is planning to stay in power over the next five years without voting or manipulating the next polls using the administration, law enforcers, and ruling party cadres, and resorting to violence. Khaleda came down hard on current Chief Election Commissioner AKM Nurul Huda saying he is not an imperial person. “No neutral election can be expected from him. He is following the footprints of the previous CEC (Rakibuddin).” Mentioning that Awami League had joined the general election in 1986 together with Jamaat, she said, “They had intimate relations with Jamaat, and still they have a covert friendship with the party.” She said Awami League will use their relations with Jamaat at the right time to defeat BNP.
Khaleda also said she was not willing to go to election in 2008 under the military-backed government, but Jamaat was very interested in joining the polls. “They (Jamaat) convinced me to finally participate in the election.” She urged the people of all walks of life to get united to save the country by ousting the current regime.
