The amount of defaulted loans in the county’s banking system rose by Tk 11,835 crore at the end of June 2022 despite the central bank relaxed loan repayment conditions for borrowers.
The central bank offered the relaxation amid a recent surge in Covid infections and flooding in the country’s northern and western areas.
As per the latest Bangladesh Bank data, the total defaulted loans in the banking sector increased to Tk 1,25,275 crore as of June 30,2022 from Tk 1,13,440 crore as of March 31 of this calendar year.
The ratio of the defaulted loans in the banking sector also rose to 8.96 per cent against the outstanding loans of Tk 13,98,592 crore at the end of June 2022 from 8.53 per cent against the outstanding loans of Tk 13,29,735 crore three months ago (March 2022), shows the BB data.
Besides, the amount defaulted loan in private commercial banks stood at Tk 62,6,78 crore, while the volume of such loan in
state-owned commercial bank reached Tk 55,419 crore at the end of June 2022.
The amount of defaulted loans in two foreign commercial banks and specialised banks stood at Tk 2,975 crore and Tk 4,194 crore respectively.
