Jamuna Group Chairman Nurul Islam Babul on Wednesday sued Basundha Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan and five others demanding a
compensation of Tk 20 billion for publishing fake, false and defaming news items in the Daily Kalerkantha and the Bangladesh Pratidin.
Judge Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan of the First Joint District Judge Court of Dhaka accepted the case and passed order to issue summons to the defendants. The judge fixed March 20 for return of the summons. Complainant Nurul Islam Babul deposited court fee worth
Tk 57,500 with the plaint.
Other five accused are Ahmed Sobhan’s wife Afroza Begum, his son Sayem Sobhan, the Daily Kalerkantha editor Emdadul Haque Milon, publisher Moinul Hasan Chowdhuty and the Bangladesh Pratidin editor Nayem Nizam.
The case statement says that on February 16 and 17, the Daily Kalerkantha and the Bangladesh Pratidin published several false and defaming news stories. It tarnished the complainant’s national and international and business reputations.
On February 17, Basundhara Group’s East West Property lodged a defamation case against seven persons and entities, including Jamuna Group Chairman Nurul Islam Babul and his wife Salma Islam, MP, demanding a compensation of Tk 11 billion for alleged publication of false and fake reports in the daily Jugantor.
