Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on Wednesday said that the decision on whether the court would be closed on the present context of coronavirus outbreak might be taken after sitting with all judges of the Supreme Court.
The Chief Justice said, “We will take decision after sitting with all judges together on whether the courts would be closed on the present context of the coronavirus outbreak. Now, the Supreme Court is on a 15-day vacation and we will sit with all the judges of the Supreme Court before reopening of the Supreme Court to take decision about the matter.”
The Chief Justice said it after planting a tree on the Supreme Court premises on the occasion of birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
“We are aware of the coronavirus situation and all the judges of the Supreme Court would sit together in order to take the decision on what role should be played by the apex court amid this situation,” added the Chief Justice.
Currently the Supreme Court is on the vacation which will end on March 28. We will sit before the reopening of the court, the Chief Justice also added.
In response to a query, Syed Mahmud Hossain said that the Supreme Court would take decision over shutting the lower courts as the lower judiciary is under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court.
“Lower courts are under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court. We will take decision over all the matters. But we have to mind the tens of thousands of justice seeker people. People’s sufferings can increase if the court is completely closed. Many come to court with urgent matters. So we will take a decision sitting together on all these aspects,” said the Chief Justice.
The ‘Mujib Borsho’ will be observed through out the year at Supreme Court as well as lower courts across the country.
