Biswa Ijtema of Tabligh Jamaat, the second largest congregation of Muslim pilgrims, is not being held on the scheduled date on the banks of river Turag in Tongi due to global coronavirus pandemic.
The government will decide whether there will be an Ijtema after assessing the Covid-19 situation in the country until January.
According to sources, the two rival groups of
Tabligh Jamaat have proposed the government to hold the Biswa Ijtema in late February or early March provided the improvement of the coronavirus situation.
The first phase of the Biswa Ijtema 2021 was scheduled for January 8, 9 and 10 and the second phase for January 15, 16 and 17. State Minister for Religion Faridul Huque Khan Dulal said, “We will monitor the coronavirus situation until January. We will certainly discuss with everyone and set a date if the existing coronavirus situation improves.”
He said there are two groups in the Ijtema. “Even if there are groups, we will share the information with them. Since we have done it in two phases this year, we will do it again next year if necessary,” said Faridul Huque Khan Dulal.
The State Minister said the pilgrims could not perform Hajj from Bangladesh last year. Although there is no possibility, the government is ready. “We are keeping the Hajj papers of minimum 20,000 to 25,000 people in order. If the Hajj can be held in a limited extent, then we will be able to send 5,000 people. We have made that arrangement.”
The State Minister for Religion said that the Tabligh pilgrims want to hold an ijtema at the end of February or the beginning of March, however, it depends on the coronavirus situation.
