UNB, Dhaka :
Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, the Convener of Citizens Platform for SDGs, Bangladesh on Saturday questioned as to why the government is taking time to implement the National Education Policy 2010, which was prepared by it.
“The National Education Policy 2010 was prepared taking suggestions from all. Why hasn’t the education policy
implemented yet? Why has the question arisen to formulate a fresh policy?” he said while addressing a discussion on quality education.
Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE) and Citizens Platform for SDGs, Bangladesh jointly arranged the discussion tilted ‘Accountability for SDG-4 and Citizen Participation’ at Brac Centre Inn in the city.
There are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the SDG-4 is quality education.
Dr Bhattacharya said the pass rates in public examinations are now considered in political perspective.
He said there is a strong doubt whether GPA 5 achievers are talented students. “There is a basic problem here. Time has come now to think whether the high pass rate will invite a long-lasting problem for the nation.”
However, Primary and Mass Education Minister Advocate Mostafizur Rahman said the government is sincerely monitoring the standard of the education system.
Noting that there is a definition of quality education in the country, he urged the civil society and non-government organisations to reach a consensus over making concrete suggestions for ensuing quality education in the country.
Member of General Economic Division of the Planning Commission Dr Shamsul Alam said quality education is not possible without ensuring quality teachers in the recruitment process.
Mentioning that irregularities are everywhere in the recruitment process, he said, “If it’s possible to recruit without any recommendation everything will go in the right direction. We won’t get competency where recommendation works,” Dr Alam said.
