Trawler capsize: Death toll rises to 16

The death toll from the capsized trawler in the Buriganga River rose to 16 with the recovery of five more bodies on Saturday morning.
The victims were identified as Abdus Samad, 35, Habib, 12, Kajal Mia, 28, Swapan, 22, and Jakir Hossain, 33. All the victims hailed from the capital’s Lalbagh area, Fire service sources said.
Deputy Director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence Mamtaj Uddin said that five bodies were recovered from the river in the morning during the second day of rescue operation.
“Some people are still missing. Divers are continuing their search for rescuing them, but the rescue operation is going on slowly due to rough weather”, the fire service official said.
Deputy Commissioner Zillar Rahman handed over Tk 20,000 to each victim’s family, he added.
All the bodies were handed over to their families, the fire service official added.
Earlier on Thursday, a trawler with about 80 passengers on board capsized in Buriganga River at Pagla in Narayanganj Sadar upazila as it collided head-on with a sand-laden trawler, sources said.
