The death toll from coronavirus in Bangladesh rose to 2,096 on Monday as health authorities confirmed 44 more casualties in a span of 24 hours.
They also detected 3,201new Covid-19 cases after testing 14,245 samples which took the total number of confirmed cases to 1,65,618.
Additional Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Prof Dr Nasima Sultana came up with the disclosure at its daily health bulletin.
So far, she said, 8,60,307 tests have been conducted and the infection rate on Monday was recorded 22.47 percent.
Against the number of total tests since March 8, the infection rate is 19.25 percent in the country, Dr Nasima said.
Across the country, 3,524 more patients made recovery during the period, she said adding that 76,149 people have so far recovered from the disease. Against the total number of detected cases, the recovery rate is 45.98 percent while the mortality rate 1.27 percent in the country.
Of those who died on Monday, 33 were male and 11 were female, she said. Since March 11, 1,657 male and 439 female died of Covid-19 in the country.
Among the new deceased, one was between 21 and 30 years, two between 31 and 40, six between 41 and 50, 13 between 51 and 60, 15 between 61 and 70 and six between 71 and 80, and another was between 81 and 90 years.
In the last 24 hours, 17 patients died in Dhaka division, 11 in Chattogram division, three in Rajshahi division, two in Khulna division, four in Barishal division, three in Sylhet division and two each in Rangpur and Mymensingh division.
Dr Nasima highlighted that although in some hospitals, including Dhaka Medical College Hospita, some ICU beds are lying vacant in some departments, they cannot be allocated to other patients. “Even though some ICU beds are vacant in surgery departments, patients under the medicine ward won’t be able to get them as those might be needed for emergency operations.”
During the period, sge said, 35 people died at hospitals across the country while nine others at their homes during the period.
Some 715 new Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospitals across the country while 644 released during the period.
Another 877 people were taken to isolation in the last 24 hours while 687 released.
Currently , 15,947 people are in isolation.
During the period, another 2,714 people were home and institutionally quarantined and 2,766 released. At present, 63,556 people are quarantined across the country.
