The trial court verdict and the documents of the sensational Ramna Batamul blast case was sent to the High Court as death references on Thursday.
The Second Additional Metropolitan Session’s Judge Court of Dhaka that delivered the verdict sent the papers to the High Court, Supreme Court registrar AKM Shamsul Islam said on Sunday. He also said hearing on the death references will begin after preparing paper book and assigning a bench.
Revealing that hearing on the death references of 2009 and 2010 is now being held with the High Court, the SC registrar said, “So we have to wait for at least four years to begin hearing on these death references (Ramna Batamul case).”
On June 23, the lower court condemned eight operatives of the banned Islamist outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad Al Islami (Huji), including its chief Mufti Abdul Hannan, to death and sentenced six others to life imprisonment in the case.
The other condemned convicts are Maulana Akbar Hossain alias
Helaluddin, Mufti Abdul Hye, Hafez Jahangir Alam Badar, Maulana Abu Bakar alias Hafez Selim Hawladar, Mufti Shafiqur Rahman, Maulana Alhaj Tajuddin and Arif Hasan Sumon.
The life-term sentenced convicts are Hafez Maulana Abu Taher, Maulana Sabbir alias Abdul Hannan, Hafez Maulana Yahia, Maulana Shawkat Osman alias Sheikh Farid, Maulana Abdur Rauf and Shahdatullah alias Jewel.
The blast that took place during Pahela Baishakh celebrations of Chhayanaut on April 14 in 2001 left 10 people dead and scores of others injured.
After the deadly blast, Babupura Police outpost sergeant Amal Kumar Chanda filed two cases with the Ramna Police Station.
Over seven and half years after the Ramna bloodbath, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on November 30, 2008 pressed charges against 14 operatives of banned Islamist outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad Al Islami (Huji), including its chief Mufti Abdul Hannan. The court framed charges against the accused on April 16, 2009.
