The people of all strata in Chittagong particularity journalists and media related persons are profoundly shocked when the death news of prominent journalist and president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), Altaf Mahmud, reached in the port city.
The sudden demise of the distinguished journalist leader cast a pall of gloom in all sphere and hundreds of journalists from different media, leaders of the professional bodies, and socio-cultural activists thronged Chittagong press club to pay rich tributes to the memories of Altaf Mahmud since last morning.
As part of the three-day mourning entire Chittagong Press club (CPC) area is almost covered with the banners of condolences and hoisting of black flags to mourn the death of such a nationally reputed journalist in the country.
Leaders of the scores of organizations including President and General Secretary of (CPC) Kalim Sarwar and Mohsin Chowdhury, President and General Secretary of Chittagong Union of Journalists Ezaz Yousufi and Hasan Ferdous, President and General Secretary of Chittagong Television Association Shamsul Hoque Haidori and Chowdhury Farid, President and General Secretary of Chittagong Sports Journalist Association Shah Nowaz Riton and Rubel Khan, President and General Secretary of Chittagong Photo Journalists Association Didurul Alam and Rashed Mahmud , President of Chittagong Metropolitan Union of Journalists Shamshul Haq Haidori and General Secretary Mohammad Shahnowaz in separate messages expressed deep shock at the demise of Altaf Mahmud and also conveyed their sympathy to the bereaved family members.
In their messages they said the country has lost a devoted journalist and the death is irreparable. They also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.
Altaf Mahmud, Executive Editor of the Bangla daily Destiny, breathed his last at 8:40am at the intensive care unit (ICU) at Bangabandhu Sehikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) hospital in Dhaka. He had been suffering from neurological problems and undergoing treatment at the hospital.
