The fourth death anniversary of noted filmmaker Tareq Masud and cinematographer and ATN News Chief Executive Officer Mishuk Munier will be observed here today.
To mark the day, different programs have been chalked out. Federation of Film Societies of Bangladesh (FFSB) and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy will organize different programs today.
Relatives, colleagues, well-wishers, fans and others will pay rich tribute to them after placing floral wreaths at their grave.
Two films ‘Runway’ and ‘Narosundar’ will be screened at Music and Dance Centre of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy around 4.30pm and 6.30pm respectively today marking the day.
Mangal pradip (earthen glam) will be lighted to recall the contribution of all the film activists including Tareq Masud and Mishuk Munier around 6.30pm today. A discussion meeting will also be held to the memory of them around 7.30pm.
Earlier on August 13 in 2011, Tareq and Mishuk along with three others were killed in a tragic road accident on the Dhaka-Aricha highway at Ghior Upazila of Manikganj while they returning to Dhaka from Manikganj after visiting a filming location.
A vehicle carrying the two celebrities collided with a passenger bus on the highway.
Tareque Masud was born in Nurpur village under Bhanga upazila in Faridpur on December 6 in 1956. He studied at a madrasah until 1971.
Masud was an independent film director, film producer, screenwriter and lyricist – all at once. He first found success with the films ‘Muktir Gaan’ in 1995 and ‘Matir Moina’ in 2002.
He won three international awards, including the ‘International Critics’ FIPRESCI Prize’, in the Directors’ Fortnight section outside competition at the ‘2002 Cannes Film Festival’ for ‘Matir Moina’.
Shafique Munier (September 24, 1959 – August 13, 2011; known as Mishuk Munier) was a media specialist and broadcast journalist from Bangladesh. He was one of the three sons of the martyred intellectual Professor Munier Chowdhury. Mishuk served as the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Editor of satellite TV channel ATN News.
As the director of news operations of satellite TV channel Ekushey Television, Munier played a key role in flourishing broadcast journalism in Bangladesh. He studied mass communication and journalism in Dhaka University. After completing study, he joined the faculty as a part-time lecturer in 1989.
At the same time, he started to work for BBC as a freelance photographer. After serving in Ekushey Television from 1999 to 2002, he left Bangladesh to migrate to Canada where he worked for The Real News. He also contributed for BBC, WTN, ARD1, Channel 4, CBC, and Discovery Health. In November 2012 he returned to Bangladesh to take up as CEO of ATN News.
