The 6th death anniversary of eminent journalist and former minister Anwar Zahid is today. On the day in 2008, he died in the city at the age of 73.
Born in 1935 in Gobindapur in Jhenidah, Anwar Zahid served as information and labour minister in the cabinet of HM Ershad. Later, he left Ershad’s Jatiya Party and joined the BNP and served as an adviser of BNP chairperson. In 1989, he formed the National Democratic Party (NDP). He was also a joint general secretary of the National Awami Party (NAP).
As a journalist leader, he served as president of undivided Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) in 1970s. He began his career as a journalist in 1957 at the Bengali daily Ittehad. Later, he worked with Daily Ittefaq, Sangbad and Inqilab and the English daily The Bangladesh Times. He also worked with weekly Ganobangla.
Anwar Zahid began his political life by joining Bangladesh Chhatra League. Later, he joined Bangladesh Students Union.
