Thousands of city dwellers, mostly women and children, swarmed parks, zoo, botanical garden and museum even on Thursday, three days after the holy Eid-ul Azha, for getting some recreation.
Although the government holiday was over on October 7, the festive mood is still everywhere. A large number of people also managed to prolong their vacation till October 11 taking the advantage of two weekly off days — Friday and Saturday.
As capital city lacks many recreation centres, the existing ones are usually flooded with the visitors during the major festivals. And so, the citizens, including women and children, came out of their homes to visit the city’s recreational spots.
The city dwellers mostly gathered at Mirpur Zoo, Sangsad Bhaban Chattar, Crescent Lake, Chandrima Uddyan, National Museum, Botanical Garden, Rabindra Sarobor, Dhaka University campus, Shahbagh Shishu Park, Suhrawardy Uddyan, Ramna Park and Fantasy Kingdom.
Officials of the Mirpur Zoo said that as many as 150,000 people visited the zoo in the meantime. The zoo authorities have also earned handsome revenue this year, they said.
The adjacent Botanical Garden also witnessed a large number of visitors yesterday. A number of visitors, while talking to this correspondent, said that they wanted to enjoy the vacation to the fullest by roaming the recreational as well as places of historic importance.
Hundreds of people, particularly children along with their parents, were found visiting the Shahbagh Children’s Park.
The park official said it got huge number of visitors yesterday and the number went up to more than expectation in the afternoon.
In front of the National Museum, people, mostly women and children, were seen waiting in long queue to buy entry-tickets in the noon.
A ticket seller at the National Museum, Mohammad Arif, said the number of visitors to the museum during the Eid holidays was three to four times higher than the normal time.
Like the previous years, the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban Chattar, the Crescent Lake and the Chandrima Uddyan were no less eye-catching this year also.
“People come here to have a glimpse of the beautiful Sangsad Bhaban. Besides, a large open space almost free of polluted environment also attracts huge number of visitors, said an official of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Another children’s park in Shyamoli area was humming with kids’ murmur. The city needs more parks like these, said a visitor.
A huge number of visitors from all walks of life come to the Ramna Park everyday round the year. This number outclasses during the Eid holidays. This year, the number of visitors was more than expectation.
Besides, the security measures taken by the law enforcing agencies inspired the holiday makers to visit the park,” said a senior official of DCC South, adding that the adjacent Suhrawardy Uddyan also drew a large number of the city residents.
