Titas Gas Distribution Company Limited on Tuesday signed a deal with Singapore-based Itron Metering Systems Singapore Pte Ltd to install 8,600 pre-paid meters in the city’s Dhanmondi and Muhammadpur areas.
To check misuse of natural gas and improvement of efficiency in service, pre-paid meter would be installed. The Government of Bangladesh (GoB) and Asian Development Bank (ADB) are financing the project.
Secretary of Titas Mustaq Ahmed and Malcolm Munro, senior director (sale) of Itron Metering Systems Singapore Pte Ltd signed the deal on behalf of their respective side. Managing Director of Tatas Engineer Md Nowshad Islam and other officials were also present at the signing ceremony.
The pre-paid meter installation will be completed by March 2015.
Though Titas signed the deal to install 8,600 pre paid meters, it has failed to implement its earlier target of installing 600,000 pre-paid meters by December 2013.
Titas has so far installed only 4,500 meters.
Titas had first introduced the pre-paid meter with the help of the Institute of Information and Communication Techno-logy (IICT) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
