Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) on Monday signed a deal with a private joint venture to purchase electricity from a 32MW solar power plant to be set up at Dharmapasha in Sunamganj.
Under the deal, BPDB will purchase electricity from the proposed solar power project at Tk 13.60 per unit for 20 years. Once implemented, the 32MW plant will be the country’s largest solar plant.
The power division awarded the project to the consortium of local firm Haor Bangla-Korea Green Energy Ltd and Korean firms Edisun Solatec Company and Power Point Company Ltd without any tender. The contractor is scheduled to install the plant in 18 months.
BPDB Company Secretary Mazharul Huq and the consortium’s chairman Young Lee signed the power purchase agreement (PPA) on behalf of their respective sides.
The private joint venture will install a 35-km 132KV double circuit transmission line to supply electricity from the plant to the 132/33 KV grid sub-station.State Minister for Power Nasrul Hamid said the solar project will help the government supply electricity to remote areas.
“The government has so far installed 44 lakh home solar systems across the country,” the state minister informed at the deal signing function.
Moazzem Hossain MP, also the managing director of the consortium, Power Division Secretary Monowar Islam and BPDB Chairman Shamsul Hasan Miah were also present on the occasion.
Power secretary Monowar Islam said the government has taken steps to diversify its fuel mix in power generation, adding that the government aims to generate at least 2000MW of electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
