Bangladesh reports its record 40 deaths from coronavirus, the biggest fatalities so far from the virus in a single-day on Sunday.
Besides, it also confirmed detection of 2,545 cases of Covid-19 infection during the same period, the biggest record of infections in a day so far.
“The death toll from the novel coronavirus outbreak in Bangladesh has climbed to 650 adding the new fatalities and the number of infections is rose to 47,153,” said Professor Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), in a regular press briefing in Dhaka on Sunday.
The highest number of the both deaths and infections reported in the wake of the government’s decision to relax the nationwide shutdown measures.
Professor Sultana said, the recovery count also rose to 9,781 after 406 coronavirus patients were released from hospitals across the country.
The recovery rate is now 20.74 percent, says Dr. Sultana.
A total of 11,876 samples were tested at 52 authorised laboratories across the country.
The DGHS official said also that a total of 3, 08, 930 people had been tested so far in the country.
According to the DGHS official, among the deceased, 33 were males and seven were females.
She said also that 28 were from Dhaka, eight from Chattogram, two from Khulna, Contd on page-2 Col-3
one from Rajshahi and another was from Rangpur division.
Among them, she said, one was between 21-30 years, five between 31-40, 11 between 41-50, eight within 51-60, 11 between 61-70, and four between 71-80 years old.
In total 391 people were put under isolation and 126 people were released from isolations.
Dr. Sultana said, 5,794 people were put in isolation so far and 3,016 were released in across the country.
Besides, a total of 2,947 people were put under quarantine while 3,042 were released.
Total 60,181 people are under home and institutional quarantine, she said.
Dr. Nasima Sultana urged the people to follow the directives and advices of the DGHS and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to keep safe from the disease.
Bangladesh confirmed its first coronavirus cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18.
Even if the government extended general holidays until May 30, it has decided to resume offices, workplaces and public transportations in limited scale from Sunday.
When the cases of infection and death are surging from the Covid-19, thousands of people began to return workplaces in the interests of livelihoods.
Public health experts fear that the decision might worsen the coronavirus situation in the country.
