The newborn girl Galiba Hayat, who cried out at the graveyard when her relatives were preparing to bury her after a doctor declared her dead in Faridpur on Thursday, was brought to capital Dhaka and admitted to Square Hospital for better treatment on Saturday.
Earlier in the evening she (newborn girl) was brought to the capital Dhaka by a helicopter. Her father, grandfather, and a nurse also flew to Dhaka with her. The newborn Galiba Hayat is now undergoing treatment in Neonatal Incentive Care Unit (NICU) of the hospital, according to the hospital sources.
A businessman, preferring not to be named, arranged a helicopter to bring the baby from Faridpur to Dhaka as the poor family was unable to pay the helicopter fare, said Abul Kalam Mia, grandfather of the baby.
A three-member medical team led by Khandakar M Abdulla-his Sayeed examined the health condition of the newborn at Faridpur Civil Surgeon Office before allowing her to shift Dhaka.
“The baby is responding better than before, so she can be shifted to Dhaka by a well-equipped ambulance. We tried our best, but she needs treatment at a Neonatal Incentive Care Unit (NICU), Dr Khandokar told journalists before sending the baby to capital Dhaka.
Abul Kalam Mia said as his daughter-in-law Naznin Akter felt labour pains around 9:00pm on Wednesday the family took her to Jahid Memorial Child Hospital in Faridpur town.
“But the hospital authorities refused to admit her, saying there was no bed left unoccupied. And when we requested the doctor Rezia Alam to examine Naznin, who was due in January, the doctor refused, saying she would “attend her later,” he said, adding Naznin gave birth to the girl normally in the doctor’s room at midnight.
“After some time, Dr Rezia Alam came out of the operation theatre and declared the infant dead. The kid was then kept in a carton on the hospital floor,” he alleged.
“We took the kid to Faridpur Municipality Graveyard for burial on the night. As it was still dark, an employee asked me to wait until the following morning. In the morning, Imam Abdur Rob while reciting from the Quran asked me to open the carton. As I opened the carton, the kid cried out,” Kalam said.
“The baby found alive after six hours its declaration of dead by the physician. Later she was taken to the same hospital, said Abdur Rob, Custodian of Alipur graveyard.
Baby’s father Mithu said the incident took place because of the negligence of the physician and their associates.
A five-member probe body lead by Usha Chakrabarty, physician of Faridpur Sadar Hospital, was formed on Saturday to investigate the negligence of the doctors. The probe body has been asked to submit the report within seven days.
Contacted, Rezia Alam said, she declared the baby dead as she did not find its pulse even though a long time passed after it was born.
