Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) on Tuesday urged the authorities concerned to extensive focus for full utilization of ‘Inland Waterways’ eco-system through timely policy formulation, long-term infrastructure development planning and increased focus on both public and private investment.
The chamber made the observation at a seminar titled “Inland Waterways-Reshaping Connectivity and Creating Economic Opportunities” at Lakeshore Hotel in the city, said a release.
Adviser to the Prime Minister on Economic Affairs Dr Mashiur Rahman graced the seminar as the Chief Guest while Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Shipping Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury was present as the special guest.
DCCI President Abul Kasem Khan delivered the welcome address in the event.
Mashiur Rahman highlighted the history of railway sector development of subcontinent and said siltation and shrinking water flow are main problems in the southern part of Country.
He emphasised on encouragement of private port development subject to some regulations and allocation of space for cargo is controlled by port which can be managed by the Shipping ministry.
Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury said Mongla Port can be more operative after building Padma Bridge and urged for a dedicated single port authority for monitoring all ports.
He called upon the businessmen to use Pangaon Inland Container Terminal as the freight charge here is only 100 US dollar.
Abul Kasem Khan Bangladesh economy requires approximately USD300b – 320b until 2030 in Infrastructure alone increasing the Infrastructure investment to 5-6 percent from current 3 percent GDP.
